Losing weight is a difficult process; naturally, most people are always on the lookout for new ways to take weight off. The Cabbage Soup weight loss plan is known to many people as a popular "fad diet" that offers an easy way to lose excess weight, but does it truly work? The diet plan is discussed here, along with the keys to losing weight and keeping it off for good.
The Cabbage Soup diet requires, as the name implies, eating cabbage soup for seven days. During this period, dieters only consume low calorie cabbage soup and a few other foods for weight loss. The program is not a lifestyle altering plan like many other popular diets, and requires no long-term lifestyle changes beyond the seven days of the diet regimen.
There are many different versions of the recipe for cabbage soup. Most contain seasonings, cabbage and other vegetables, such as celery, bell peppers, mushrooms, onions, and tomatoes. Some people enjoy adding spicy flavorings to improve the taste of the soup. Other dieters concerned with sodium intake want to prepare a reduced-sodium recipe. Many current versions of the diet incorporate healthy sources of protein, such as protein shakes and tofu to make the diet more balanced.
Besides cabbage soup, there are highly specific rules for which additional foods are permitted on each day. As a general guideline, dieters can eat cabbage soup every day, plus fruit on day one, vegetables on the second day, vegetables and fruit on the third day, skim milk and bananas on the fourth day, tomatoes and beef on the fifth day, vegetables and beef on the sixth day, and vegetables, brown rice, and fruit juice on the seventh, final day. Those using the diet then resume their regular eating habits, hopefully now a few pounds lighter.
Is the Cabbage Soup diet truly effective for weight loss? Although no official research study has examined the diet conclusively, those using the diet report mixed success. For many dieters, the plan resulted in weight loss (up to ten pounds, typically less), but only for a short while, as the weight gradually returned as the individual returned to their normal meal plans. Some dieters complained of light-headedness, fatigue, and lack of focus while on the Cabbage Soup diet. Other dieters did not feel any effects whatsoever, seeing no weight loss, but no illness either.
The Cabbage Soup diet program is among countless fad diets that dieters can try. Unfortunately, because this plan may not work, for many dieters it just adds to the difficulty of being overweight. A better approach to losing weight does not rely on gimmicks or temporary diet plans. It takes dedicated work and lifelong commitments to see permanent weight loss. For most, this means eating healthy and getting plenty of exercise.
