Many people feel uncomfortable or experience minor anxieties when pushed into a new situation or a large group of people who are unfamiliar to them. Unfortunately, for approximately ten percent of Americans, anxiety about social situations can be so severe as to be disabling. Experts now think that a much larger number of people may deal with milder types of social anxieties that can result in significant issues in everyday social situations.
The term for this type of anxiety is 'social phobia'. It often happens when a person has fears or worries that often arise from being involved in a social event. Someone with a social phobia might also have trouble with making themselves stop thinking too much about how others are judging or evaluating him or her.
For those who have social phobia, anxiousness can happen in many different kinds of situations, including going to the store, going to a party, speaking in public, standing in front of an audience, or being given an interviewed. These types of socially related anxieties can also manifest in the body; for many people with
social anxieties, sweating, blushing, shaking hands, or intestinal issues can happen when facing these kinds of high stress situations.
Leading experts now think that social phobia involves issues with self-confidence. Self confidence is our ability to believe that we have the capacity to make the right decisions, be independent, and have control over our lives. People who struggle with self-confidence -- a very common issue in today's high-stress world -- might worry too much about how they are perceived, which may eventually lead to not wanting to participate in social activities or of beginning to feel "out of control".
Fortunately, there are some basic actions a person who suffer from self-confidence issues can undertake to take back this control. One course of action someone with self-confidence issues can undertake is to get an anxiety and phobia workbook. You can think of the anxiety and phobia workbook as a simple method to gain insight into the issues you are experiencing by maintaining a record of triggers and mood-related symptoms; the anxiety and phobia workbook also contains exercises to do that will help you develop better introspection about your self-confidence issues.
When you have gotten to the point at which you have started to have some insight about your issues with self-confidence, and have made the decision that now is the time to start developing self-confidence, then it might be a good idea to investigate a kind of therapy that has been proven to be very successful in social phobia. Just like the anxiety and phobia workbook, this specific kind of therapy is characterized by having a focus on aiding you to become pro-active and gain control over your life. What this means is that you will be curing your own problems.
This type of treatment, called hypnotherapy, functions by taking control of the hidden powers of your subconscious mind to help you become more confident, self-assured, calm, and comfortable with yourself. Believe it or not, we all come into this world with these abilities, but due to traumatic life events, learned disempowerment, and troubled social interactions, we often lose sight of our native abilities to take control of these powers. Hypnosis therapy has been scientifically demonstrated to be useful for people with self-confidence and anxiety issues.
Many people who have self-confidence and other anxiety related issues often seek out a "quick fix" solution, such as medications, natural remedies, and short courses of traditional therapy. Although these are strategies that can be helpful for some people, they don't truly address the root of our self-confidence issues - our subconscious mind. To deal with self-confidence issues, you have to be in charge of your own treatment.
If you do decide to check out hypnotherapy to help you gain self-confidence, you will begin a series of treatments with a hypnotherapist who will encourage you to deeply relax. Within this place of calmness, your subconscious mind is wide open and willing to be reached by hypnotic suggestion. Your hypnotherapist will then work with you in this open mental state by using repetitive suggestion to elicit your realization that you are a confident, strong, and independent person.
Other options for those who struggle to deal with self-confidence are to participate in hypnosis through videos or audio CDs, which can be watched or listened to in the comfort of your own house. Many people also find that learning self-hypnosis, a special relaxation technique in which it is possible for you to become open to your innermost wants and needs, with only minimal guidance, is very helpful. Whichever form of anxiety hypnotherapy you select, you will be certain that you are undertaking a crucial step in enacting your own healing and recovery.
